AUGUST 4 - National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, National Friendship Day
In 1930, Ruth Wakefield decided to cut up pieces of a Nestlé's Semisweet Yellow Label Chocolate bar and add them to the butter cookie dough she was making at The Toll House Inn in Massachusetts.
The Nestlé Company found out about her great recipe and bought the rights. By 1939 Nestlé had invented the first chocolate chips and bought the name Toll House. Now, Ruth Wakefield's recipe for "Toll House Cookie Recipe " is printed on every yellow bag of Nestlé Chocolate Chips.
In honor of Ruth, make some toll house chocolate chip cookies with your favorite pint-sized baker. When time or attention spans won’t allow for baking Toll House Cookies from scratch, consider this simple alternative. Buy ready-to-bake chocolate chip cookie dough. All you have to do is tear off the pieces, mold them into any shape you want, and pop them in the oven.
Did you ever wonder why chocolate chips don't melt in the oven? Well, they actually do. It just looks like they don't because they retain their shape when melted. If you were to break a hot chocolate chip cookie apart, you would see that the chocolate chips have melted.
Now that you've made those delicious chocolate chip cookies, it's time to share them with your friends. Invite them over for delicious cookies and milk. Or, surprise your friends. Deliver a plate of cookies with a photo or hand drawn picture of your child and his friend. They'll both be delighted.
