January Activities, Crafts
JANUARY 21 – Squirrel appreciation day, National hugging day, Martin Luther King day
It's squirrel appreciation day. Besides having cute bushy tailes, there are a number of famous squirrels. See the list - Famous Squirrels Personally, I always liked Rocky.
Hugging makes everyone feel good! However, nothing is as good as hugging your favorite little person. So go for it!! You can make a big hug for anyone and give it to them as a gift.
Materials
- White shelving paper
- Red tempera paint
- Crayons, ribbon
- 1 rubber band
- Paint brush.
How to
- Cut a strip of the white shelving paper as long as your child's outspread arms.
- Paint the bottom of your child's hand (palm and fingers) with the red paint.
- Press child's hand firmly on either end of the paper with fingers pointing outward (be certain to use the unwaxed side).
- Allow print to dry.
- Write "a great big hug from me to you" across the strip with crayons adding some x's and o's for love and kisses.
- Roll the strip up and secure with rubber band. Thank you Dr. Cindy.
In a famous line from Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, he says “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” To illustrate Dr. King's message, show your child a brown egg and a white egg. Then break the eggs open. Remind your child that (just like the eggs) though people might look different on the outside, they are the same on the inside. Finish off the discussion by explaining that Dr. King was a civil rights leader who worked for the equal treatment of African-Americans in a time in America when their were denied the same rights and privileges as white Americans. Ask your child the complete this sentence: "I have a dream that one day all people will __________."

Tennis is a wonderful sport for kids. Playing outside with friends, or hitting a ball against the garage door is so much fun that kids will forget that they are actually exercising. Grab a racket and some balls and head over to the local park.
