DECEMBER 27 - It's about time week, Make cut out snowflakes day, National fruitcake day
Since ancient times, we’ve been concerned with measuring and keeping track of time. As the new year approaches, help your kids understand calendars and the concept of the year. Get a blank calendar. Talk about the seasons, and the months. Fill in important dates together – birthdays of friends and family. Cut out pictures that go with each month to decorate the pages. I'm not sure if snowflakes that land on my nose and eyelashes, or unfolding a cut up piece of paper to reveal a beautiful snowflake is my favorite thing, but they are both pretty wonderful. Try out these snowflake patterns, based on the crystal structure in real snowflakes. There are some here that even the smallest snow lover can make and the results are beautiful. Fruitcakes have been around for centuries—and some folks who don’t care for the taste would tell you it’s the same fruitcakes that are still around! Fruitcakes can include nuts, fruit, fruit rinds, spices and some sort of liquor or brandy. The ratio of fruit and nuts to batter is fairly high, with just enough cake batter to hold it all together, making this treat very dense. Try a new twist on this traditional dessert by making fruit cake cookies instead.
