AUGUST 17 - Pencil Day
Did you ever wonder why pencils are yellow? No, it's not because it makes it easier to find them! During the 1800s the graphite used to make pencils was from China, which was the best in the world. In China, the color yellow represents respect and royalty. So, manufacturers painted their pencils yellow to signal that they were using Chinese graphite. To this day, seventy-five percent of the pencils sold in the United States are painted yellow. A great game to play with unsharpened pencils is “pick up sticks.” So gather up the family and play this oldie but goody! More pencil trivia: The modern day pencil evolved from writing instruments that were used in Ancient Rome. Learn all there is to know about the pencil.

AUGUST 18 - Cupcake Day
What can be more festive than cupcakes? No one is sure where cupcakes originated. One theory is that small cakes were sometimes baked in teacups, to cut down on the long time it took to bake a cake over a hearth. Wherever they came from, they are delicious. This website is filled with dozens of delicious cupcake recipes. Go wild! Cupcake Recipes

AUGUST 19 - Aviation Day
This day—by order of a presidential proclamation in 1939—celebrates the birth of Orville Wright who piloted the “first self-powered flight in history.” Let your child pretend to fly like an airplane, while singing these words to the melody of ‘Are You Sleeping?’
Tiny airplane, tiny airplane, Up so high, in the sky, Look how fast you're moving, See how I am zooming, Just like you, Zoom, zoom, zoom!

History, Radio, August Activities
August 20-National Radio Day
Originally, the radio was used for navigational purposes, greatly reducing the isolation of ships and saving thousands of lives. The 1912 sinking of The Titanic dramatically highlighted the value of radio to ocean vessels.
As time went on, radio became a source of news and entertainment. Explain to your children how before the advent of television, entire families gathered in front of the radio each day to listen to skits, dramas, and other performances.

AUGUST 21 - World Daffodil Day. National Homeless Animals Day. Hawaii Admission Day
In 1959, President Eisenhower signed a proclamation making Hawaii the 50th state. Celebrate by having a Hawaiian luau.
Go to a party store and get some hula skirts, leis, and tropical paper tablecloths.
You can make your own hula skirts out of green trash bags.
Use the bottom of the bag as the waistband and cut the bags in strips stopping an inch below the waistband.
- You can also use butcher block paper for the table cloth and decorate it by painting Hawaiian icons such as palm trees, flowers, and fish.
- Dance the hula
- Do the limbo
- Top drinks with tiny festive paper umbrellas
- Serve lots of tropical fruit such as coconuts, papaya, pineapple, mangoes and bananas.
- Play Ukulele music.
And don’t forget to welcome your guests with a big “Aloha!”
National Homeless Animals Day calls attention to the 8 million animals who will enter a shelter annually in the United States. Animal rescue groups report that more animals than ever before are being put to sleep due to shortage of homes. Gather or make pet toys with your kids. Then go to to the local animal shelter together to donate the toys. Make Homemade Dog Toys Make Homemade CatToys

August 22-Be An Angel Day
You can’t make a snow angel in August, but you can make a sand angel. Today’s the perfect day to head to the beach or a sandbox and flap away. And when you plop your little one into the tub to wash away the sand, use all those wonderful suds and bubbles to make a fluffy halo and wings.

AUGUST 23 - National sponge cake day
Believe it or not, the earliest recorded recipe for the Basic Sponge Cake Recipe dates back to 1615. It had a cookie-like quality until the Renaissance, when it evolved into more of a biscuit. By the middle of the 18th century, beaten eggs were used for raising ingredients instead of yeast, and the dessert was on its way to having the spongy texture we know today.
You can have fun making this simple dessert extraordinary by topping it with your favorite fruit, ice cream, or sauce. And don't forget the whipped cream!
Another great activity is to make funny versions of different foods. For example, stick birthday candles in a kitchen sponge to make a non-edible sponge cake. Flatten a piece of cake with a toy hammer to make “pound cake.” Pile different kinds of fruit in a toy cake pan to make “fruit cake.”

AUGUST 24 - National Waffle Day. Strange Music Day
Did you know there are band instruments hidden all over your kitchen? Use an empty roll of paper towel for a horn; put some dried beans in an empty coffee can (make sure to secure the lid!) to make a maraca; gather pots and pans, wooden spoons, and measuring cups to assemble an impromptu drum set. Now instruct your child to make the craziest, loudest music he can. This activity is best enjoyed once all the neighbors are awake.

AUGUST 25 - Kiss and Make Up day
Siblings will always fight, no matter how much they love each other. Often it is very difficult for them to get over the conflict and move on. On this special day, talk to your children about the importance of forgiveness—otherwise known as “kissing and making up.” Then have fun together making a kissing collage. Put some bright lipstick on the both of you (one color for you, another for your child), then take turns kissing a white sheet of paper several times. Crack each other up by making the loudest puckering sounds you can muster!
