SEPTEMBER 7 –Grandma Moses Day, Salami Day, Neither rain nor snow day, Google commemoration day

Happy birthday Google! The changes that Google and other search engines have brought to the world are profound. In seconds, you can find information on the web that used to take days to research in the library - if you could find it at all.  Now,  the world's biggest library is right at you fingertips and the answers are instantaneous. Take some time to introduce your child to Google and other search engines to research things they are interested in. But, as they are googling around, keep a very careful eye on the sites your children are looking at. While the world wide web is a wondrous place, it's important to teach children safe surfing habits. NetSmartKids is a very helpful source of Internet safety info for kids.

Grandma Moses, aka Anna Mary Peterson, is best known for popularizing folk art - or primative art. She started her art career at the young age of 75!

Put on an art exhibit at your home. Have the neighborhood kids over for some painting fun. Then, invite the parents over for a gallery opening Serve delicious snacks. Have each artist on hand to tell the story of their painting.

Neither rain nor snow day commemorates the opening of the opening of the New York Post Office in 1914. These famous words are inscripted  on the building:

"Neither snow nor rain not heat nor gloom of night ,stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."

Use today to teach kids about the post office. Have them write a postcard to a friend. Then go to the post office and explain to kids what happens to the post card they've mailed. Be sure to look at all the wonderful stamps!

Salami day began in 2006. In addition to be delicious, apparently salami is also an art medium Check out this

Try using different types of salami to create your own artful sandwiches. And, the  next time you are looking for some quick art supplies, maybe it's time to whip out the luncheon meats - wierd but effective!
