DECEMBER 21- First day of winter, Crossword puzzle day, National flashlight day
Today, the Northern Hemisphere is as far away from the sun as it will be all year, making it the shortest day of the year—and the first official day of winter. Bundle up and head outside to create an artistic masterpiece, using the snow as your canvas. Take several spray bottles and fill each one with cold water (warm water would melt the snow) and a few drops of food coloring. Mix as many colors as you'd like. Send the kids out with the spray bottles to paint the snow. Take pictures of the art before it melts away. Dress the kids in something old - they will get dirty.
Today is the anniversary of the flashlight, invented in 1898. Here are a number of flashlight games - lots of fun to play indoors on a cold day. flashlight games
Afterwords, the kids might enjoy these North Pole Crosswords puzzles and word fun. A perfect way to celebrate crossword puzzle day.

DECEMBER 26 - Kwaanza, National candy cane day, National thank you note day, Boxing day
It’s never to early to teach children about writing thank you notes and expressing gratitude. Turn the thank you notes into a fun creative project. Bring out the photos, markers, stickers, glitter and glue. The recipients will feel as though they are the ones who received a gift.
Kwaanza is celebrated from December 26 through January . Make your own "Andinkra" cloth to commemorate the holiday.
Andikra cloth
Supplies
- Black paint
- Potato
- Wide tooth comb
- Paper
How to
- Dip the comb in the paint.
- Use the comb as a brush and draw two horizontal lines approximately 4 inches a part. Add more paint as necessary.
- Then draw two vertical lines that cross over the ends of the two horizontal lines with the comb to create a square. At each corner of the square, there should be a cross hatch of the vertical and horizontal lines. There will be a blank space in the middle.
- Cut the potato in half.
- Carve a shape in the potato - a heart, or star, or leaf. Dip the potato in the paint and stamp the design in the blank space between the "comb" lines.
- Frame your cloth, or use it to decorate a table.
Try easy and fun candy cane craft.
So what is Boxing Day? My husband is British, but other than the name of the day, he couldn't provide an explanation. It turns out no one is sure. One explanation is that the wealthy landowners in England gave their servants the 26th off (they were busy serving on the 25th) and gave them boxes of food and gifts. For me, we move the boxes out of the living room, and enjoy one more peaceful day to enjoy.

DECEMBER 11 - International mountain day, UNICEF birthday
December 11 was designated as International Mountain Day by the United Nations General Assembly for the purpose of bringing awareness about the importance of mountains to life. Talk to your kids about the animals that live in the mountains. Talk to them how the rivers start in the mountains. And if you can, go take a hike.
The Bear Went Over The Mountain (tune: For He's a Jolly Good Fellow)
The bear went over the mountain, The bear went over the mountain, The bear went over the mountain, To see what he could see
To see what he could see, To see what he could see
The other side of the mountain, The other side of the mountain, The other side of the mountain, Was all that he could see
Was all that he could see, Was all that he could see,
The other side of the mountain, Was all that he could see!
UNICEF provides children with health care, clean water, nutrition, education, protection, emergency relief and more in over 150 countries. When you buy holiday gifts from UNICEF you're supporting the well-being of children everywhere.
