June 4- National Donut Day

 Whether you prefer donuts or doughnuts, these fried treats are delicious. According to Wikipedia , the history of the donut is disputed. Some say they were introduced by Dutch settlers. It is also claimed that the ring shaped donut was invented by a 16 year old American, Hansen Gregory. Where-ever they came from, they are a delicious treat, with scrumptious variations enjoyed all over the world. Head out to the local donut shop to celebrate! My personal favorite is jelly!

JUNE 5 - Drawing Day, Pencil Day, National Trails Day, Richard Scarry's Birthday

Using a pencil to create a piece of art is a wonderful way for kids to express themselves. And the process of observation, or free form expression is as important as the results. In fact, studies show that people that doodle while taking notes, retain 29% more information than non-doodlers. Here is a fun Drawing lesson for kids at home. The step by step instructions show how to make cartoon characters using numbers and the letters of the alphabet!

Go take a hike! There is so much to see along a beautiful hiking trail. Plants and rivers, animals, waterfalls - and a great sense of adventure. Trails.com offers a wonderful resource for finding kid-friendly hiking trails near you. Check it out!

JUNE 16 - Fudge Day, Fresh Veggies Day, National Hollerin' Contest

It’s not always easy to get kids to eat healthy, fresh food. But if you make the act of eating fun, little ones are more likely to try what you offer. For example, buy or make several different dips and have your child try them out using raw carrots, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower and celery sticks as dippers. Make a fruit kebabs with stacks of colorful pineapple, strawberries, and melon. (Don’t let your child eat off the wooden skewer, though. Remove fruit by hand, then dispose of the skewer.) Assemble a funny face on an open-faced sandwich with veggie pieces; or make one on a waffle or pancake with fruit. Or puree your child’s favorite combination of fruit and then transfer the mix into a cup with a spout so that the kids can pour the mixture into ice trays (or popsicle forms if you have them). If using ice trays, you can put a plastic spoon in each cube so that your kids have convenient holders for their frozen juice pops. And, of course, don’t forget to eat your own fair share of fruits and veggies to model good nutrition for your child.

While, not as good for you as fresh fruits and veggies, fudge sure tastes good!   And it is pretty easy to make.

Ingredients:

    * 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
    * 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips (12 ounces)
    * 1 cup milk chocolate chips (6 ounces)
    * 2 tablespoons butter
    * 1 teaspoon vanilla
    * 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts or small marshmallows, optional

Preparation:
Lightly grease a 9-inch square pan; line with a piece of parchment paper about 18 to 24 inches long, leaving the ends out serve as "handles" to help you lift the fudge out of the pan.

Heat the condensed milk, chocolate chips, butter, and vanilla in a double boiler over simmering water or in a microwave on low. Stir until the chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth. Stir in nuts and marshmallows, if using; pour into the prepared pan. Spread gently. Cover lightly with plastic wrap. Chill until firm. Lift out of the pan and cut into small squares.

National Hollerin' Contest Every year, on the third Saturday of June, in an otherwise sleepy borough of southeastern North Carolina known as Spivey’s Corner (population 49), some 5,000-10,000 folks gather from far and wide to take part in the festivities and entertainment in the day-long extravaganza known as the National Hollerin’ Contest.

JUNE 22- National Carpenter Ant Awareness Week

While to adults,  carpenter ants are pests that destroy the wood in homes, for kids,bugs and ants are fascinating  to study. Ants, and the way colonies work together are especially interesting and can show children how people working together can accomplish big things. . These two videos show carpenter ants working in a log, and carpenter ants moving their nests.

Check out your local Children's Museum for some great "bug" exhibits.

Then rent a copy of "Antz" and "It's a Bug's Life"

Sun Protection, Birthday Song, June Activities

JUNE 27 - Happy Birthday to You Day, Sunglasses Day

The melody for this traditional song was written by sisters Patty and Mildred J. Hill of Kentucky 117 years ago today. If someone in your family has a birthday to celebrate today, then enjoy singing this historic tune.

If there aren’t any birthdays to celebrate, follow the lead of The Mad Hatter and the March Hare and have an un-birthday party, instead! Get some cake, punch, teacups and plates and a copy of Alice in Wonderland. Read the section on the Mad Hatter’s un-birthday tea party while you enjoy your own silly festivities.

According to
allaboutvision.com , it is important for kids to protect their eyes from too much sun exposure.

"The risk of damage to our eyes and skin from solar UV radiation is cumulative, meaning the danger continues to grow as we spend time in the sun throughout our lifetime.

With this in mind, it's especially important for kids to protect their eyes from the sun. Children generally spend much more time outdoors than adults. In fact, experts say as much as 80 percent of our lifetime exposure to UV rays occurs by age 18.

Therefore, make sure your kids' eyes are protected from the sun with good quality sunglasses. Look for sunglasses that block 100 percent of UV rays and that also absorb most HEV rays. Also, encourage your child to wear a hat on sunny days to further reduce UV exposure."

Antoine de St. Exupery, Crafts, June Activities, The Little Prince

JUNE 29 - Camera Day, Antoine Saint Exupery's Birthday

Hand your child an inexpensive camera, and send them exploring. It could be a back yard lion hunt, and exploration of the letter D, or silly pictures of the dog. Put all the pictures in a book, and have your child write down or tell you the story of each picture. Then, add the book to your library. It will become a bed time favorite.

French author and aviator Antoine St. Exupery brought us The Little Prince. Who can forget the image of the boa constrictor who swallowed an elephant? Or wondered what it's like to have your own planet? If you've never read this classic, you are never too old. You can preview the book online here: The Little Prince Then, run to the library to read the whole thing! Afterwords, enjoy these Coloring Pages
