NOVEMBER 16—Button day, Have a party with your bear day

At each stage of your baby’s life, there are always a few outfits that you hate to part with. You can save the clothes themselves, or take a button or two from each one and sew them onto a pillow made out of a favorite receiving blanket or other item. As the years go by, you’ll not only have a keepsake to cherish, but an interesting art object and conversation piece.

Older children will enjoy making a button collage. Go to fabric store and buy many different sizes, shapes, and colors of buttons. Get some glue and poster board, and have your child make a collage using the various buttons. Display the work of art proudly for all to admire!

Bring out the teddy bears and give them a hug on their special day. While you’re at it, you may want to share this teddy bear game:

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, (sit on floor, clap hands twice)
Turn around. (spin around)
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, (clap hands twice) Touch the ground. (tap the ground)
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, (clap hands twice) Reach up high. (reach hands towards sky)
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, (clap hands twice) Wink one eye. (wink) Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, (clap hands twice)
Slap your knees. (slap knees)
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, (clap hands twice) Be still, please. (sit still)

NOVEMBER 20—Traffic Light Invented, Children's day

American Garrett Augustus Morgan invented the electric traffic light on this day in 1923. Previously, traffic lights had been powered by gas, with levers that had to be turned manually.

Make your own traffic light by helping your child cut a red, green, and yellow circle out of construction paper. Glue the circles onto a shoe box lid to simulate a real traffic light. Explain to your child that red means “stop,” yellow means “slow down,” and green means “go.” You can also have fun playing the game “Red Light, Green Light.” Glue a red circle and green circle each to its own craft stick.

Position yourself at one end of the room, your child at the other. Hold up the green circle and say “Walk!” Then hold up the red circle and say, “Stop!” Use different commands, such as hop, skip etc., and speed up the game as your child gets better at it. Here is a fun Traffic Sign Quiz

Today is also Universal Children's Day, established by the UN in 1954. One of the goals is to celebrate childhood. And what better way to celebrate childhood than by playing - board games, catch, hopscotch, bowling. Go out and have some fun!

NOVEMBER 26—Alice in Wonderland published

This is the date that Alice in Wonderland was first published. This classic story about a topsy-turvy world in which anything can—and does—happen was written by Englishman Lewis Carroll and published in 1865. Have an “unbirthday” tea party in honor of the March Hare and the Mad Hatter by filling a teapot with juice, stacking a plate with cookies, and being as silly as you please. A top hat for you and bunny ears for your little one will add to the fun.

Check out this fun Alice in Wonderland iPad app

And if the National Ballet of Canada's new production of Alice in Wonderland comes to your town - don't miss it.Tour Schedule
It is a ballet for today's generation of multi-media kids.  Think classical ballet meets Broadway in terms of spectacular costumes, sets and special effects.

NOVEMBER 28—Red planet day, Make your own head day

Make your Own Head day is often a spring board for creative self- portrait art projects. Make your own head out of clay, or with Mr. Potato Head. Maybe do paper mache over a balloon, or used a stuffed sock for a base and glue on googly eyes, yarn hair, and a felt mouth. This is something the whole family can participate in. Take a photo of finished "family" and you will have the most original and personal Holiday cards of all your friends.

Whether it's Gullivers Travels, War of the Worlds, Stranger in a Strange Land or The Martian Chronicals, Mars, the red planet has provided an ongoing source of fascination. Mars is present in our lives every week as Tuesday, Martes in Spanish, Mardi in French.  Learn more about our nearest neighbor, playing these cool
Mars NASA Games . Then go out with your kids, look at the night sky and imagine what life might be like on the red planet.
