History, Radio, August Activities
August 20-National Radio Day
Originally, the radio was used for navigational purposes, greatly reducing the isolation of ships and saving thousands of lives. The 1912 sinking of The Titanic dramatically highlighted the value of radio to ocean vessels.
As time went on, radio became a source of news and entertainment. Explain to your children how before the advent of television, entire families gathered in front of the radio each day to listen to skits, dramas, and other performances.

AUGUST 26 - National Cherry Pop Day
This is a quick and easy way to make homemade cherry pops, and so simple most children can do it on their own. Pour cherry soda into an ice cube tray. Freeze slightly until a craft stick placed in the liquid will stand upright. Place a craft stick in each section of the tray. Wait until the pops freeze completely and enjoy!

AUGUST 28 - Dream Day
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963 during the Civil Rights march on Washington, D.C. A great way to teach about racial equality is to show your child a brown egg and a white egg. Ask your child to tell you how the eggs are different. He or she will answer that they are different colors. Now crack the eggs open and again ask how they are different. Your child will tell you that the eggs are both the same. Explain that the same is true of people: We may be different colors on the outside, but inside we are the same. To learn more about Dr. King and to hear excerpts from many of his speeches, visit The King Center online.

August 30-National toasted marshmallow day
There is nothing that says summer to me more than toasting marshmallows over the simmering coals of a campfire. Personally I prefer the lightly browned gooey marshmallows, but the charred ones, are pretty good.
Usually, we have to settle for our marshmallows toasted over the barbecue - and on occassion in the microwave. However you enjoy them, whip out a bag and enjoy this summer indulgence.
While you are at it enjoy these love camping Haiku from the book Toasting Marshmallows

In 1826, James Smithson, a British scientist, drew up his last will and testament, naming his nephew as his beneficiary. Smithson willed that if his nephew died without heirs the estate should go “to the United States of America, to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men.”

Support Groups, Twins, August Activities
AUGUST 9 - National Twins Day
Did you know that approximately four out of every 1000 births results in identical twins? And that this rate has stayed constant throughout history? Or that 22.8 births per thousand result in fraternal twins?
If you're having or have had twins, consider joining a Mothers of Twins Club (NOMOT) for support, information and other twins for play dates. Find a local chapter.
Even if you're not a twin, have some fun being a twin for a day. Dress up with your child, or have them dress up with a friend in matching outfits. Try similar hair styles. And have the compare notes to get down their "twin" facts. Take pictures. Then, rent a copy of "The Parent Trap" to top off a twinful day. RaisingTwins.com is a site put together for mothers of twins by a mother of twins. It is filled with tons of helpful information.

AUGUST 14 - Sandcastle and sculpture day, National Creamsicle Day
Building sand castles is an activity kids big and small enjoy at the beach. Try these tips for the best sand castles ever.
- Use moist sand.
- Start with a sand mound that you build and pat down a little at a time. Keep it wet.
- Use buckets, bowls and funnels as molds
- When carving away sand, take it off in thin layers.
- Use plastic knives, forks and straws for adding fine details.
For real inspiration, enjoy these amazing sand sculptures created by professional sculptures.
According to Wikipedia "In 1905, Frank Epperson, then only 11 years old, left a stir stick in a mixture of powdered flavored soda and water out on the porch. That night, temperatures in San Francisco reached a record low. When Epperson woke the next morning, he discovered the drink had frozen to the stir stick, creating a fruit flavored 'icicle,' a treat he had named the Epsicle. Eighteen years later, in 1923, Epperson introduced the Epsicle to the public for the first time at an Alameda, California amusement park, Neptune Beach. In 1924, Epperson applied for a patent for his "frozen confectionery" called the Epsicle ice pop.[1] He renamed it the Popsicle, allegedly at the insistence of his children. It was originally available in seven flavors and marketed as a "frozen drink on a stick."
Apparently, Creamsicles come in orange, lime, grape and rasberry. But to me, they have to be orange. Try making some delicious home-made Creamsicles

Math concepts, August Activities
August 2-National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
Ice cream sandwiches aren’t just a warm-weather treat; they’re a lesson in beginning concepts. Ask your child to point out the top, middle, and bottom of an ice cream sandwich. (Here’s a tricky one: Flip the sandwich over. Has the top and bottom changed?) Make other kinds of “sandwiches,” using blocks, Play-Doh®, fabric, sponges, or real bread and food fillings, and direct your child to add the top, middle, or bottom layer. Create multi-decker sandwiches and count each layer. Identify all the sandwich ingredients by color, size, and shape. Whether they’re cold or hot, real or not, when you turn sandwiches into a learning tool, they become great brain food!

AUGUST 4 - National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, National Friendship Day
In 1930, Ruth Wakefield decided to cut up pieces of a Nestlé's Semisweet Yellow Label Chocolate bar and add them to the butter cookie dough she was making at The Toll House Inn in Massachusetts.
The Nestlé Company found out about her great recipe and bought the rights. By 1939 Nestlé had invented the first chocolate chips and bought the name Toll House. Now, Ruth Wakefield's recipe for "Toll House Cookie Recipe " is printed on every yellow bag of Nestlé Chocolate Chips.
In honor of Ruth, make some toll house chocolate chip cookies with your favorite pint-sized baker. When time or attention spans won’t allow for baking Toll House Cookies from scratch, consider this simple alternative. Buy ready-to-bake chocolate chip cookie dough. All you have to do is tear off the pieces, mold them into any shape you want, and pop them in the oven.
Did you ever wonder why chocolate chips don't melt in the oven? Well, they actually do. It just looks like they don't because they retain their shape when melted. If you were to break a hot chocolate chip cookie apart, you would see that the chocolate chips have melted.
Now that you've made those delicious chocolate chip cookies, it's time to share them with your friends. Invite them over for delicious cookies and milk. Or, surprise your friends. Deliver a plate of cookies with a photo or hand drawn picture of your child and his friend. They'll both be delighted.
