JANUARY 23 – Measure your feet day, National pie day
Feet come in all sizes; big, little, fat, and skinny. A great way to teach your child about feet is to trace them on a piece of construction paper. If you really want some fun, put some tempura paint in a pie tin, and allow your child to make a footprint by placing his foot in to paint, and then on to paper. Now it is your turn to do the same!
Pies are quickly surpassing cupcakes as the desert du jour, even surpassing cupcakes in popularity. And pies are easy to make. You can use frozen shells, but playing with the dough is half the fun. Here is a really easy pie recipe that the kids will love making.
Peanut Butter Pie
Ingredients
- 4 ounces cream cheese
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 cup crunchy peanut butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- 8 ounces frozen whipped topping
- Thawed 1 graham cracker pie crust - you can buy these pre-made at the market
How to
- In a large mixer bowl combine cream cheese and sugar; mix well.
- Add peanut butter and mix.
- Slowly add milk and mix well.
- Fold in whipped topping.
- Pour into pie shell and cover.
Delicious with a glass of cold milk.
Happy birthday, Brenna. Happy anniversary, Phil.

Parenting, January Activities
JANUARY 25 – A room of one’s own day, opposite day
Take this opportunity to make it a day for teaching your little one about opposites. This can be done by marching, left, right, left, right. You can also do bending exercises, up, down, up, down. Use your imagination-you get the idea, Don’t you? Yes, No, Yes, No?
Even when kids share a room, it is still nice to feel like they have a room of their own. Encourage kids to put up pictures or other personal items on "their side" of the room to personalize. Personalized throw pillows and comforters will also help define personal space. But the ultimate room of your own can be found at Digital Dollhouse. Decorate your own Victorian home with hundreds of beautiful furnishings. Be careful mom, while you might sign up with your child, adults can become seriously addicted to this home decor extravaganza.Digital Dollhouse

JANUARY 27 – Lewis Carroll’s birthday, Thomas Crapper day
Cuddle up with your kids and enjoy reading Alice in Wonderland together. Then, take a trip Through the Looking Glass to where the Jabberwocky lives. Jabberwocky
Today celebrates London plumber Thomas Crapper - who did much to popularize the flush toilet. He did have the honor of supplying the toilets to the home of King Edward V11 in the 1880s, supplying 30 toilets. Think how much more convenient potty training is with indoor facilities.

JANUARY 29 – Jigsaw puzzle day, National corn chip day, Seeing eye dog day
Puzzles are endlessly fascinating for kids. Every time they put one together, their problem-solving skills get better. To make your own puzzle, ask your child to draw a picture on a piece of paper. Mount the paper to light cardboard, then cut into several shapes. The more “abstract” the original drawing, the harder the puzzle will be to put back together. If purchasing a puzzle, make sure that it is appropriate to your child’s age and skill level. This will avoid frustration and make the experience a fun one. So pop a big bowl of popcorn to munch on while you work, spread the puzzle pieces on a big table, and have a puzzle-thon with your child today!

JANUARY 31– Inspire your heart with art day, Lloyd Alexander birthday
Set the artist free, inside of your little one, by letting him paint, color, sculpt or just scribble. Allowing this artistic freedom encourages creativity, hones fine motor skills, and teaches children to stay on task. It takes patience for little fingers to paint and scribble or to sculpt a puppet out of clay. You never know- you might have a little Picasso in your midst!
Happy birthday to Lloyd Alexander, author of The Black Cauldron (part of The Chronicles of Prydain)

January 11 - International Thank You Day, Cuckoo Dancing Week
Children learn about manners by being introduced to them as soon as they are able to grasp the concept. Teaching and expecting good manners early on will ensure that behaving politely comes naturally to your child as he gets older. Thank you notes are a great hands-on project in politeness and encourage creativity, too. Ask your child to create a thank you note for someone who has recently done something great for her. It can be a painted, colored, or even a scribbled note. Tell them how happy the recipient will feel when they receive their special "thank you" from your child.
This week commemorates the masters of comedy, Laurel and Hardy, whose them song was The Dancing Cuckoos. In honor of these two funny men, make up your own silly dance to the song.
