June 3 - Sports America Kid's Month

It's time to go out and PLAY!

Summer is a great time to try out new sports and grow skills in familiar sports. Here are some great tips from to keep it fun, and keep kids moving!

  1. For preschoolers - just focus on learning physical skills - throwing, kicking running. Don't worry about the rules just yet.
  2. Let kids experiment while they are trying out new skills. Resist the urge to make them do it perfectly. Let it feel like play, not work.
  3. Encourage kids to play impromptu sports games with their friends after school or on the weekends in addition to any organized sports they might be involved with.
  4. Praise your kids for their good effort. Don't spend time going over their performance or their mistakes. This will just make them feel that they are constantly being judged.
  5. Kids have to sit and pay attention all day at school. Don't get angry with them for daydreaming in the outfield!
  6. After a game, ask kids questions like, "What was the best part of the game?" and "Did you have fun?"
  7. Encourage kids to try out a variety of sports, and let them decide which ones they like. Remember, this is supposed to be fun!

Early summer is the deadline for fall signup for many sports programs like AYSO or Pop Warner . Check the programs near you so you don't miss important deadlines!

JUNE 6 Drive-In Movie Day, Rose Month, National Yo Yo Day

Parents used to pack the kids into the car in their pajamas with pillows and blankets and snacks and head for the drive-in movies. - with their giant outdoor screens under the stars.   Believe it or not, there are still a number of active drives-ins around, with the biggest number still operating in California. Enjoy a romantic, nostalgic evening under the stars - and much less expensive than a night at the local cineplex. Find one here

This year, my roses are particulary gorgeous. It must be all the rain we had. Fresh roses are beautiful, but they can also be enjoyed once they’ve dried out. Mix air-dried intact rose blooms and petals together with some dried leaves and place in a bowl or basket for potpourri. You can also sew the mixture into a piece of fabric for a lovely, scented drawer sachet. For a more intense fragrance, add a few drops of essential rose oil to the dried flowers.

National YoYo day is celebrated on Donald Duncan's birthday. According to Beverly Hernandez, of about.com they are the second oldest toy in history, next to the doll. Yoyo-ing is fun - and there is lots of cool science that makes it all work. Learn a little science - and then let your inner yo yo! Yoyo Science

June 14-Flag Day, Family History Day

Make a flag to hang in a window on this patriotic day. Hold a sheet of white construction paper horizontally and draw a square in the upper left hand corner. Color the square blue. Using the red crayon, draw red stripes across the paper. Place fifty self-adhesive gold stars on the blue square. To display outside, glue the flag to a wooden skewer and plant in the lawn or garden.

Your children will love to hear the stories of when you were a child. Take some time to tell them some of your stories, and record them for posterity. Help your children interview a grandparent of other elderly relative. It's a gift both generations will enjoy.

June 15-Smile Power Day, Nature Photography Day

The world around us is so beautiful. Go on a back yard safari, and take up close and personal pictures of some of the wonders you'll find - blades of grass, bugs under rocks, shady trees. Print out the photographs, and create a a gallery showing. Your child can tell each guest about their photos.

A smile is a powerful tool. It's the one thing that every you give it away, you get one back. Show kids how they can make the world a happier place with their beautiful smiles.

JUNE 21 - Go Skateboarding Day, Summer Solstice

Today is the first day of summer north of the equator. It’s also the longest day (from sunrise to sunset) of the year in the northern hemisphere. (South of the equator, today is the shortest day of the year.).

The solstice is known by many other names, including midsummer.  Midsummer is thought to be a very special day when magical things can happen—many of them involving fairies.

Make your own whimsical winged creature at home. Use an old-fashioned clothespin (the peg kind, not the hinged kind). If you don’t have a clothespin, tightly roll a small piece of paper into a tube and tape securely. Glue on felt or other fabric for a skirt or pants, draw on a face and hair, and glue a ring of dried flowers to the head. Cut wings out of paper or gauzy fabric and glue to the back.

The safest, and most fun places to skateboard are in official "skate parks."  Use this hand directory to find one near you.  Find a Skate Park And don't forget your helmet!

JUNE 28 - Aquarium Month, Paul Bunyan Day

Meet the most amazing creatures at the aquarium while giving your child a greater understanding of the diversity of life on our planet and the importance of protecting our oceans and rivers. All this, while having a great time. Be sure to check out the special program that many aquariums offer- sleepovers, classes and more! National Aquarium Guide

Kids will love hearing the folk tale of giant lumberjack Paul Bunyan and his equally over-sized blue ox Babe. According to the legend, when he was just one week old, Bunyan was wearing his father’s clothes. The tale just gets taller from there!

After reading your child the story, ask questions to spark your child’s imagination, such as: What do you think Paul Bunyan used for socks? for buttons on his shirts? for a blanket? for a toothbrush? The main goal is to get your little one to THINK BIG!

AmericanFolklore.net has collected the Paul Bunyan stories here for you to read. These tales are especially fun to tell round the campfire, at a backyard camp out, or under a sheet tent in bed with a flash light.
Paul Bunyan Stories including The Birth of Paul Bunyan, Babe the Big Blue Ox, Paul Bunyan and the Frozen Flames, Paul Bunyan and the Log Jam, Paul Bunyan's Kitchen, Paul Bunyan Tames the Whistling River, and Round River Drive.
