OCTOBER 7 – Simon Cowell Birthday,Alice Dalgliesh birthday, "Cats" opens on Broadway

Happy birthday Simon Cowell. Have the kids come over for some singing fun. Put on some music, and encourage mass singing and dancing. However, forget the judging - just sing for the joy of it!

Alice Dalgliesh is a Newberry Honor winning author best known for her popular children's books about American holidays such as
The Thanksgiving Story and The Fourth of July Story Other wonderful books include The Courage of Sarah Noble and The Bears on Hemlock Mountain.

Today marks the opening of the musical "Cats" on broadway in 1982, based on
Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, a book of poetry by T.S. Eliot. Watch the video, and then encourage the kids to pretend that they are cats.

OCTOBER 8 –National pierogi day, american touch tag day, world egg day, RL Stine birthday

If you've never eaten pierogi, you are in for a treat. What's a pierogi? It is a Polish won ton - boiled, steamed or fried. . Try these delicious Pierogi Recipes from AllRecipes.com

This is the day egg industries throughout the world celebrate the natural nutrition, versatility, convenience, and economy of eggs and egg products.

You can show just how versatile eggs are by using their shells in an art project. Fill a quart container with eggshells, and then spray them with a mixture of water and bleach to kill any germs.

Once they are dry, break the eggshells and dye them different colors by placing the fragments in bowls of food coloring. Dry the eggshells thoroughly.

Create unusual mosaics by gluing the pieces onto construction paper.

Egg Trivia: Did you know that white eggs are produced by hens with white feathers and ear lobes, and brown eggs are produced by hens with red feathers and red ear lobes?

Where would the world be without RL Stine? It would certainly be a less deliciously scary place without the hundreds of "Goose Bump" books. If your child hasn't been sufficiently scared after reading the books, check out these
spooky games at the RLStine website.

OCTOBER 14 –World sight day, Lois Lenski birthday

Lois Lenski is one of my favorite classic storytellers. She considered herself an artist first, and was the illustrator of the original The Little Engine That Could, pictures by Lois Lenski. Here are a few of my favorites:

Mr. and Mrs. Noah (Lois Lenski Books)
Now It's Fall (Lois Lenski Books)

World Sight Day brings attention to the problems of blindness and vision impairment in the world. According to WHO:

  • 153 million people are visually impaired because of uncorrected refractive errors (uncorrected near-sightedness, far-sightedness or astigmatism). In most cases, normal vision could be restored with eye glasses.
  • Up to 80% of blindness and 85% of moderate and severe visual impairment is avoidable by prevention, treatment or cure
  • Almost 90% of blind people live in low-income countries

Kids can help by organizing a collection of old, still in good condition eyeglasses. This is a project, where kids can understand a tangible benefit to their generosity. There are a couple of charities that will pass them along.
Unite for Sight will distribute glasses to kids in adults in Africa and One Sight helps in North America.

OCTOBER 23– iPod day, Make a difference day

The iPod was first introduced October 23, 2001, changing the way we get music forever. Show your kids some black vinyl LPs, 8 Track tapes and cassettes. They'll be shocked at some of the "ancient" ways people listened to recorded music. Then load up some favorite tunes and dance away.

Teaching children the joys of giving and helping others will help them grow into compassionate adults. Help them look around and see how the kind and helpful things they can do everyday can make a difference. You can also help them select a small project based on the needs they see at home or at school.. Check out a copy of the book,
The Three Questions [Based on a story by Leo Tolstoy] by Jon Muth. This is a wonderful story about Nicolai who learns the importance of "now" and the "person next to you."

OCTOBER 27– National tell a story day (UK and Scotland), Edith Bagnold birthday

Edith Bagnold is the author of National Velvet (Book and Charm), the story of Velvet Brown, a girl who's determined to enter her horse, Pie, in the Grand National Steeplechase. Starring a 12 year old Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney National Velvet is perfect for an evening of popcorn and family togetherness.

Everyone loves to hear a good story. And kids especially love stories about themselves. Share some stories about family members around the dinner table. Sharing stories will give your children a good foundation in writing and public speaking - while sharing family history. Here are some tips to make your stories memorable- whether you are sharing family anecdotes, or giving a presentation at work.

  1. Start with a catchy beginning - grab their attention
  2. Pick a subject your audience will be interested in.
  3. Plan a beginning, middle and end. Try introducing the characters up front, then sharing the heart of the story (perhaps a problem to be solved) and wrap it up with a strong finish.
  4. Use details like color, tastes, smells, textures, or temperature to paint a vivid picture. to create a vivid picture.
  5. Use humor. Use your whole body to tell the story
  6. Don't be afraid of pauses - they can build suspense.
  7. Keepyour story short- no one wants too much of a good thing!
