OCTOBER 14 –World sight day, Lois Lenski birthday
Lois Lenski is one of my favorite classic storytellers. She considered herself an artist first, and was the illustrator of the original The Little Engine That Could, pictures by Lois Lenski . Here are a few of my favorites:
Mr. and Mrs. Noah (Lois Lenski Books) Now It's Fall (Lois Lenski Books)
World Sight Day brings attention to the problems of blindness and vision impairment in the world. According to WHO:
- 153 million people are visually impaired because of uncorrected refractive errors (uncorrected near-sightedness, far-sightedness or astigmatism). In most cases, normal vision could be restored with eye glasses.
- Up to 80% of blindness and 85% of moderate and severe visual impairment is avoidable by prevention, treatment or cure
- Almost 90% of blind people live in low-income countries
Kids can help by organizing a collection of old, still in good condition eyeglasses. This is a project, where kids can understand a tangible benefit to their generosity. There are a couple of charities that will pass them along. Unite for Sight will distribute glasses to kids in adults in Africa and One Sight helps in North America.
