APRIL 28—National Playground Safety Week

Take a picnic lunch to the playground today and enjoy pushing your little one on the swings, catching him or her at the bottom of the slide, and digging in the sand. And while you’re there, double-check to make sure that the equipment and environment are up to safety snuff kidchecker.org

APRIL 16 - National High Five Day

Sometimes its hard to remember to celebrate our accomplishments – and before you know it, the moment has passed and you’re on to the next thing. Homework done? Give a high five. Picked clothes up off the floor? Helped fold the laundry? Set the table? Tried a new vegetable? High Five.

And give yourself a high five too.

APRIL 22—Earth Day, National Jelly Bean Day

On this day honoring the environment and the earth’s natural resources, make a three-dimensional “found art” collage to introduce children to the idea of recycling. Collect items such as newspapers, aluminum foil, plastic cups, and egg cartons, and glue them in an artistic arrangement on a large piece of cardboard. Admire your child’s creation, and congratulate him on recycling “trash” into a work of art. Remind her that everyday is Earth Day.

Plant a garden with your child. They will be thrilled to see plants grow and to taste the delicious goodies from their garden. Here are some tips for gardening with kids of all ages.

Jelly Beans, inspired by Turkish Delight, were created in the early 1800s. Jelly Beans grew in popularity during World War 2 when chocolate was scarce. Then, they took a huge boost in popularity when Ronald Reagan, as govenor of California wrote a letter that said "we can hardly start a meeting or make a decision without passing around the jar of jelly beans." A few years later, Jelly Belly's were born - and regularly sent to the White House, when Ronald Reagan was President.Today, there are 50 official flavors of Jelly Belly's Jelly Belly Official Flavor Guide How many flavors have you tried?

APRIL 1—April Fool’s Day

Pranks (as long as they are harmless!) can be lots of fun for everyone. Today is the day to put sugar in the salt shaker, short sheet the beds, tell someone he has a big bug crawling on his head, or call and leave a silly message on the answering machine.

Even if you know what your little one is up to, play along; you don’t want to deprive him or her of that gleeful moment of yelling, “April Fool!"

APRIL 7—World Health Day

The earlier you integrate a balanced diet and daily exercise into your child’s life, the more likely he or she will be to carry these healthy habits into adulthood. Join a gym program together. You'll find lots of wonderful programs listed in Kids-List. When you go bike riding, walking, swimming, or running, be sure to take your little one along. And after exercising together, reward yourselves with something nutritious and delicious, such as a delicious yogurt, granola and fruit parfait.

APRIL 9 - Keep America Beautiful Month

Children need to be taught why they shouldn’t litter. Explain how important it is to put trash in waste receptacles or recycling bins, and encourage them to throw away their own napkins, wrappers etc. in an appropriate manner. You and your little one can also help “Keep America Beautiful” by volunteering to plant flowers at a local park or playground. Point out graffiti and explain why defacing property is wrong. Help your youngster to understand that we are all responsible for keeping our communities clean and attractive.

APRIL 12 – National Library Day

How many presidents are there?  Who invented peanut butter? Where is Punxsutawney?  No question needs to go without an answer if you have a library nearby.  A visit to your local library is inexpensive, fun and educational.  The joy of sharing books is a priceless gift you can give your child.  Most libraries offer a wealth of materials to stimulate and amuse all ages, including Mom and Dad.  Many have music-listening stations, video equipment, story cassettes and computers.  Every time you share a story, a book, a game or a song with a child, you have a chance to light a flame that will last a lifetime.
