JANUARY 24 – National compliment day, Bubble wrap appreciation day

Get ready for a bubble wrap stomping party. Tape some bubble wrap on the floor ( try different sized bubbles) – and let the stomping begin!

A compliment feels even better to give that receive. Have your child think of a compliment they can give to their friends and family members. Help pave the way, by paying a compliment to your child.

January 7 - Harlem Globetrotter Day

Marking more than 85 years and over 20,000 games, the Harlem Globetrotters may be the most entertaining team in history.   So make like a Harlem Globetrotter and turn toy cleanup and laundry into a pint sized sport.   Grab a laundry basket - fold those socks - and have the kids score for every pair that drop in the basket.

Cleaniing up the toys?   Take the soft ones - and drop them right into that basket.  The next thing you know, they'll be cleaning up without any prompting.

January 8 - Bubble Bath Day, Learn to Ski Day

Kids as young as 5 can learn to ski.  Most of the resorts have a combination ski school/ day care.  Kids should be taught by a professional ski instructor who will teach them the best, safest techniques for their age and skill level.  And the benefit is - that you'll enjoy a few hours on the slopes before you get to see the the new skills your child has acquired.

After a day playing out in the snow, there is no better way to take the chill off than a nice warm bubble bath.  Bring in some colanders, measuring cups, a sponge and you are all set for some bath time fun.

Try on some crazy bubble beards, mustaches and hairstyles - or even some lovely bubble fashion creations.  Invite a couple of friends to double the fun.

New Years, January Activities

January 1 - Happy New Year!

Welcome to the new year.   The ancient Greeks came up with the idea to welcome the new year like with the same joy as a new child, and started the symbol of a new baby for the new year.  Many cultures eat special foods to bring good luck for the new year.   Black eyed peas and rice are especially lucky (and filled with protein and fiber).   Eating greens (collard, cabbage, spinach, chard) bring prosperities.   The Italians and Cubans enjoy grapes and the Dutch donuts - symbolizing the year coming full circle.

Let’s wish each other a happy new year in as many languages as we can muster.  Here are a few:
            English   -   Happy New Year!
            Bhengali -   Shubho Nobobosho!
Chinese  -   Kung Hei Fat Choy
            French    -   Bon Année
            German  -   Glückliches Neues Jahr
Greek     -   EytyxiSmenos O KainoypioS XponoS
            Italian     -   Felice Nuovo Anno
            Japanese     -    Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimazu
            Korean    -   Sehe Bokmanee Bateuseyo
            Spanish  -   Feliz Ano Nuevo
Swahili    -   Nakutakia Heri Ya Mwaka Mpya!

And while this year, the Tournament of Roses parade will fall on January 2 (they never march on a Sunday), your children will enjoy putting on their own "Rosebud Parade"  Put on some marching music, gather some instruments - pot lids, oatmeal boxes and sealed plastic jars filled with rice or beans - and march around the living room.   If it's warm enough to be outside, you can decorate the wagons and trycicles with plastic or paper flowers and streamers.

Today is also a day for New Years resolutions.   We like to right down hopes, dreams and goals and predictions for the new year - rather than a list of "ought tos"   It's always fun at the end of the year to see which things come true.   I'm always surprised at how many things get crossed off that "I'd like to do this list" once they are written down.

January 5 - Bird Day

In cold climates, the ground is hard in winter, making it difficult for birds to get enough food.

Create a simple "cereal necklace" to feed the birds.  String some unsweetened cereal on about two feet of string or yarn.   Tie the ends together and hang it on the branch of a tree.  Enjoy watching your feathered guests dining.
