June 9-Donald Duck’s Birthday

Donald Duck was created on this day in 1934. Celebrate with your child by pretending to be ducks: waddle, quack, and flap your wings. Or grab a bag of bread and head to a pond to feed some real, live ducks. For more fun, sing and act out the following song:

Five Little Ducks

Five little ducks, went out to play (hold up five fingers)

Over the hills and far away. (hold side of hand to forehead as if scanning horizon)

When the mother duck went "quack, quack, quack," (touch four fingers to thumb to show beak opening and closing)

Four little ducks came waddling back. (flap elbows close to body)
(Count down until . . .)

No little ducks went out to play Over the hills and far away.

When the father duck went "quack, quack, quack,”

Five little ducks came waddling back.

June 8 - Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, Best Friends Day

Consider adopting a cat from the shelter. You may be bringing home a new best friend. A cat is a lovable, charming pet that offers endless fun and entertainment and shelters are filled with cats that would love a good home.

Here are 10 tips from the ASPCA to help your new addition fit into your home.

  1. Like dogs, cats need to be fed good, nutritious food regularly, at least once a day.
  2. Cats also need plenty of cool, clean, fresh water. Adult cats do NOT need milk, which might make them fat and give them diarrhea.
  3. Keep your cat inside your home with you. But keep him in a separate room from birds and fish, which cats will attack. Also keep him away from house plants, which cats may destroy. Certain plants are also poisonous to cats.
  4. Do NOT automatically have your cat declawed. Declawing has been compared to removing your fingernails. To prevent your cat from scratching or tearing your furniture, trim his claws regularly and provide him with a small rug or scratching post. Verbal scolding can also work wonders.
  5. Unlike dogs, cats do NOT need to go outside. Cats are almost always naturally housebroken and will use a litter box even at an early age. Allowed outside alone. cats often get lost or hurt and sometimes get killed.
  6. Make sure your cat always wears identification, even if you never let him outside.
  7. Unlike most dogs, cats do NOT need to be bathed. A healthy cat keeps himself clean and well groomed.
  8. Make sure your cat gets good veterinary care, including all necessary examinations and shots.
  9. Have your cat spayed or neutered once the animal reaches maturity (usually after six or seven months of age). Your cat will enjoy a longer, healthier life, there'll be fewer strays on the streets and you'll be spared the hassles of a cat in heat.
  10. Give your cat plenty of love and affection. Though cats are more independent than dogs, they thrive on your companionship.
Consider TWO cats. Two are company for each other - and two will bring more love into your life!

JUNE 11 - Corn on the Cob Day

Roasted, boiled or steamed – corn on the cob is a truly delicious summer treat. The Native- American’s made a special treat with this delicious vegetable, by throwing the corn on the cob into the fire. When the corns started to explode – popcorn was invented. Be careful not to give popcorn to kids under age 4. It could be a choking hazard.

After your corn feast, save the cobs and let them dry. Roll the cobs in tempera paint, then roll the painted cobs on paper to create deliciously textured art.

JUNE 12 - Raggedy Ann and Andy Day, Wicked World of Croquet Day

Off with her head! Can you keep the red queen from demanding yours? Dress up Alice in Wonderland style and host a wicked game of croquet. The set up is a little complicated, but hitting the ball through the wicket with the mallet is lots of fun. And everyone can play. You’ll need a croquet set. Here are the rules

Somewhere between 1900 and 1914 Raggedy Ann was born. According to raggedyann.com, the story of her creation goes like this: “...a small girl bursts into her father's art studio, trailing a battered rag doll behind her. Panting, she tells Daddy about discovering the faceless doll in Grandmother's attic. Laying aside his afternoon's cartoon, the father picks up the doll. He studies her face for a moment before picking up his cartooning pen and deftly applying a new, whimsical face. He suggests that Grandmother might be enlisted to sew on another shoe button to take care of a missing eye. Then, reaching for a volume of poetry behind his desk, the father browses through several by poet and family friend, James Whitcomb Riley. Compressing the titles of two of his favorites -- "The Raggedy Man" and "Little Orphant Annie" -- he asks, his daughter, "What if we call your new doll Raggedy Ann?.."

JUNE 18 -Child Vision Awareness Month, Go Fishing Day

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that a child have his or her first eye examination by six months of age. The checks performed in schools help detect obvious vision problems, but they can't replace a thorough exams. Summer is a great time to get these exams done.  You'll feel good knowing your child will be able to see well and ready to learn when September comes.

These tips will help prepare your child for their first eye exam.

* Talk to your child about eyes and vision in general. . Help your child draw an eye chart on a large poster board for playing eye doctor...take turns being the patient.

* Ask the doctor if they will be giving the child eye-drops. If yes, practice with some artificial tears appropriate for kids. Put the drops in your eyes first, so your child can see how it works.. The easiest way to administer eye drops to kids is to have them lay down with their eyes closed. Put a drop in the inside corner, and the have them open thier eyes. The drops will go right in.

* Visit the eye doctor for a tour, before the actual exam. . Most optometric offices are willing to schedule an appointment for your child to tour the office without actually having an eye exam. Many optometrists or ophthalmologists will allow your child to see the exam room, and possibly handle a few of the eye exam tools. See if your child is comfortable with the doctor - and let them see where the "prizes" are kept.

Relax: If you are nervous, your child will be too.
