OCTOBER 24– United Nations Day, Bob Kane (creator of Batman) birthday

On this date in 1945, the United Nations became an official governing body. Then it was made up of fifty countries, but now it consists of eight-one. Today, see how many foods you can eat that have their origin in another country (e.g., pasta, shish kebab, an almond cookie). Go to the library and ask to be directed to folktales from around the world. Check out different countries’ flags on the Internet. Tune your radio dial to a “world music” station. Finally, look at a globe together and point out where your family is located in this great big world of ours. Learn more about United Nations Day

Where would Gotham City be without Batman. We owe it all to Bob Kane, the artist and writer who created Batman while still in his teens. Have your kids try their hand at drawing a comic. It can be about anything - the dog, your family, or even a mouse!

OCTOBER 30– National candy corn day

It’s fun to make an art project with edible materials! Ask your child to draw a Halloween picture, and then invite him or her to add to the scene by gluing on candy corn. The candy can be used to make objects, or to create a festive border. You’ll probably want to monitor this activity so the candy corn ends up on the paper and not in your child’s tummy!
