March 1-National Pig Day
Open any farm-themed book for kids, and you will surely find lots of these round, pink, barnyard friends for your child to identify.
Make a pig ‘mask” by decorating the bottom of a small paper cup. Punch to holds in the side of the cup and attach some string. Oink, oink!

MARCH 11 - Johnny Appleseed Day
The apple first appeared in America around 1630. Apples became widespread due to the work of John Chapman, also known as Johnny Appleseed, who planted orchards and sold apple tree saplings. Today we can find apples growing in every corner of the country.
The next time you eat an apple, save the seeds for this easy craft activity: Thank you Dr. Cindy for sharing this activity.
- Have your child paint the bottom of two white paper plates red.
- Glue apple seeds to the other (non-painted) side of the plates.
- Punch a hole in the side of one plate, about 1/2" in from the edge. Repeat on the other plate.
- Place the plates on top of each other (painted sides facing out), lining up the two holes.
- Thread red yarn through the holes and tie in a bow, forming a “hinge” that allows the paper apple to open and close.
- Add a paper stem, and enjoy peeking inside your apple to look at the seeds.

March 16 - Youth Art Month
Turn an area of your home into an art gallery and give a show in honor of your child. Use a bulletin board, the front of the fridge, or a hallway wall to display your little Picasso’s masterpieces. Establish a time for the “show” to begin, distribute tickets to family members, and give out fliers with a biography of the “artist.” Finish up with a reception complete with refreshments. Later, put the works of art carefully in storage or frame for ongoing enjoyment.

MARCH 20 - First Day of Spring
Today marks the spring equinox, when the sun is above and below the horizon for an equal amount of time all over the world. This means we have twelve hours of daylight, and twelve hours of night.
Celebrate the coming of this glorious season by turning yourself and your child into walking, talking springtime flowers.
- Paint the back of a paper plate (dessert-size for your child, dinner-size for you) in a bright, springy color.
- Next, cut flower petals out of colored construction paper and glue them all around the painted edge of the plate.
- Punch a hole in each side of the plate, and thread equal lengths of yarn through each hole and tie off.
- Don your flower hats and tie under the chin.
- Curl up on the ground, then slowly “grow,” stretching your leaves (arms) to the sun!

FEBRUARY 28- International floral design day
It may be the middle of winter, but there are still some places you can go to smell the roses! Head to a local florist shop or the floral department of your supermarket and buy some spring flowers to brighten up your home.
Or create a bouquet of tissue paper flowers that will last for months. Simply stack 4-6 rectangles of tissue paper (about 5” x 7”) in different colors, then accordion fold on the long side. Twist a green pipe cleaner around the bottom to secure, then gently separate the layers to make your flower “blossom.”

FEBRUARY 2-Groundhog day
According to legend, if a groundhog in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, pokes its head out of its burrow on February 2nd and sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If the groundhog doesn’t see its shadow, spring is just around the corner.
Your child can make his or her own groundhog shadow without ever leaving the house. Simply help your child cut the shape of a groundhog out of brown construction paper using safety scissors. Attach to a craft stick or straw. Now shine a flashlight on a blank wall, and place the paper groundhog in front of the flashlight to make its shadow appear. Explain to your child that an object that falls in the path of a bright light will cast a shadow. To make a groundhog that can pop out of its burrow, cover a Styrofoam cup with brown construction paper (you can even add cotton balls or white felt around the top edge for snow). Then make a small version of the groundhog puppet above.
Cut a slit the width of the craft stick or straw in the bottom of the cup, then slip the stick or straw through, pulling down until the groundhog is hidden in the cup. Place in the path of light, and “pop” the groundhog out of its burrow by pushing up on the stick or straw.

FEBRUARY 5 – Weather person day
Through rain, hail, sleet, or snow, you can be sure that your local television weather-person will always be there! Take this opportunity to talk to your child about the weather. Tear out pictures from magazines that show the various types of weather and make a weather collage. You and your little bundle of sunshine will have fun making this project together!

crafts, July activities
July 25- Thread the needle day
Learning to sew is a wonderful activity for kids. In addition to enhancing fine motor skills, and learning practical skills such as fixing a small tear or sewing on a button, it is just fun! And kids can see the results of their creative efforts.
A great first project actually doesn't involve any sewing at all - and will keep your child cuddly all year. No sew fleece blanket
And this Hair scrunchies uses very little fabric and sews up quickly - perfect for sharing with friends.
Really small kids will enjoy sewing yarn and shoelaces through these Sewing Cards
Now, if I could only see that little whole well enough to thread the needle!
