February 10 – Plimsoll Day, Chinese new year - Year of the Snake, Grammy Awards
What is a Plimsoll, you ask? In South Africa, they call them tekkies. And in Australia, they’re known as sandshoes. And, here in the US, Sneakers or Tennis shoes. Canvas on the top, rubber on the bottom, these were invented by the Liverpool Rubber Company in the 1830’s to wear at the beach.
Put on you High Heeled Plimsolls and have a rocking good time.

FEBRUARY 13 – Great backyard bird counting week, Get a different name day
Get in a little bird watching while practicing basic math skills – counting, classification and sorting. Help your child count all the birds you can find in your back yard. Have your child put a different color jelly bean in a bowl for each different variety of bird they see. When you go inside, sort the jelly beans by color. Count each type. Then count the total. Line up the jelly beans in rows by colors to make a simple bar chart. Helpful hint – you’ll have more birds to count with a bird feeder. Pick a different name for the day. Your kids migh enjoy picking a name from your family history or from a favorite book or movie. Ask your child why they chose that name.

FEBRUARY 15 - Galilleos birthday, Susan B Anthony's birthday
Born in 1564, this astronomer and physicist helped scientifically refute many medieval theories of how the natural world worked. Most controversially, he gathered evidence to support Copernicus’s theory that the ethe earth and the other planets revolve around the sun—as opposed to around the earth. He also discovered the satellites of Jupiter, the phases of Venus, and the existence of sunspots. In addition, Galileo invented many devices we still use today, among them the microscope, the pendulum clock, and the telescope. Just for fun, celebrate the life of this scientific pioneer by peering through an empty paper towel roll and pretending it’s a telescope. Then, as soon as you have a moment, visit an observatory where you can look through a real one to get up close and personal with the stars and planets. Planetarium Directory
Susan B Anthony was an important civil rights leader and a key leader of the suffragette movement which led to the 19th amendment to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote. She was the first woman commemorated on a coin, the Susan B Anthony dollar. Talk with your children about their right and responsibility to vote. Introduce your children to the idea of voting, but voting on some decisions at home. Make sure that the choices you put on the "ballot" are all acceptable to you. Some ideas - which vegetables to plant in the garden, which color paint to put in the bedroom, which type to potatoes for dinner etc.
